DRIFT’s debut album, ‘The Innocence’, is a moody collection of 12 original songs written and produced by the band’s creator, Mark Quon. Quon, a singer/songwriter known for his cinematic lyrics and dark themes, formed DRIFT in the summer of 2019. DRIFT features Quon on acoustic guitar and vocals, Terrance Neal on electric guitar/background vocals, John Allen on bass, Matthew Fletcher on drums, and Linda Quon on background vocals.
“These songs are mostly personal reflections,” says Quon who explained that he often draws from dreams and personal stories for inspiration, including loss, addiction, religion and social issues. The album’s title track, The Innocents, is Quon’s tribute to the earth, inspired by Marvin Gaye’s Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology).
“The song came on the radio and it struck me how Gaye was singing about the environment back in the early 70s. I forgot how beautiful that song is. It inspired me to write a “follow up” song with a direct message about the earth’s resilience and the certainty that theearth will heal itself after we become extinct,” said Quon.
Quon, a native of Los Angeles, has been living, writing and performing in Central Oregon since 2005 when The Quons started playing locally as a duo. Before forming DRIFT, Quon led the local folk band Parlour, and he currently fronts the David Bowie tribute band Aladinsane.
The Innocents was recorded at Central Oregon Recording, a partnership between Fletcher and Scott Baber. The album is available on Spotify and Apple Music. CDs will be available for purchase at the album release party.
